iPhone Slowing Down?
2 Mar
My name is Chris Tellez and I'm a Geek.
I also happen to be the Manager of Technology Training Programs for C.A.R.'s for-profit subsidiary Real Estate Business Services (REBS).
I'm looking forward to sharing my techie/geek experience, and knowledge with all of you here on C.A.R.'s Official Blog.
For my first post let's talk about one of my favorite devices/tools/toys...THE iPHONE!!!
I am a proud, card-carrying iPhone addict. The device is like a second brain for me...at times it's my main brain depending on the day. The other day I noticed it had slowed down pretty significantly.
I tried turning it off and on.
NADA!
I tried the re-boot function (hold the top button and home button at the same time)
ZIP!
I tried letting it lose its charge and fully re-charging it.
ZILCH!
So then I hit the HOME BUTTON twice to take a look at, and swipe through all of the apps that were "on hold" waiting for me to switch to them at my whim.
I swiped, and swiped and swiped, and swiped, and swiped, and swiped.
WOW! There was a lot running there
So I decided to close some of the apps that I hadn't used for awhile. To do this I held my finger on one of the icons in the multi-task list until they started rocking back and forth and had little red circles with minus signs appear.
I then began tapping on the minus signs for the apps I wanted to close. I swiped to the left or right to get to the apps I wanted to close. Once I closed about 30 of them sure enough my iPhone was back up to full speed.
So if you find your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch isn't quite as responsive as it had been here's a re-cap of those steps for you to follow:
1. Double-click the Home button (The circle button with the square in it).
2. Hold down on any one of the icons until they begin to rock back and forth and red minus signs appear.
3. Press the minus signs for any apps you're not currently using or won't switch to anytime soon.
4. Double-click the Home button to get back to your normal mode of operation.
Please note that this function is only available on iPhone (3GS and later), iPad and iTouch (3rd generation and later) devices that are running iOS4 and higher.
Hopefully those steps will get your iPhone, iPad or iTouch humming as fast as it was when you first started using it.
I look forward to seeing you back here for more of my techie posts!

what is the next great phone from verizon?
That's a great question Sue. Right now I think Verizon is focusing on the iPhone 4 and so far they seem to be doing pretty well. I know that when the iPad 2 is released next week it'll be available with 3G service from Verizon as well as AT&T. I believe the next thing they really want is an iPhone that works with their 4G LTE network. While I have no doubt that'll eventually happen I would say it'll be at least a year before we see it. Then again no one expected the big bump that the iPad got so it could come sooner then we think.
That's a great tip. I look forward to my iphone running much faster now! Do you think it'll help with reception too? (lol)
Chris, is there any trick for dealing with slowness on the iPhone 3G?? Inquiring minds wanna know...
Unfortunately Sharon there isn't. As the iOS has evolved it's made it harder for the older devices to perform at a decent speed - much like it is for desktop and laptop computers. So while you get some of the cool new features like folders and fast-switching, unfortunately you trade that for reduced speed. Since chances are you're coming up on the end of your 2 year commitment with AT&T it might be worth hanging in there till June when Apple will likely announce the next iteration of iPhone and then upgrade.
As an anti-anything Apple person, i appreciate your geekiness, but it's droid for me. Just got the Motorola Xoom and it is awesome, and am waiting until it's my upgrade date to retire my blackberry for the Thunderbolt.
Looking forward to following your posts.
Thank you Virginia. I appreciate kind comments coming from an anti-anything Apple person. I am curious if you evaluated the iPad before getting the Xoom and what you're finding in the Xoom that the iPad just doesn't or won't have with the release of iPad 2?
how about flash 10.1, LTE in 700MHZ band, the android platform, which by the way enabled me to have apps like evernote, dropbox etc. which I had already discovered thanks to tech savvy agent.
My son is a computer engineer and has been an apple fan since he was a child, but i never bought that there is one answer for every consumer, computer user
I have my top producer, mls and contracts on my xoom, i am a happy camper.
Virginia I 100% agree with you that there is no one answer for every consumer.
In fact the one thing I recommend to everyone who asks me about what to buy is "Try them all out". What works for me won't necessarily work for someone else. It's kind of like cars...everyone drives what they do because it best meets their lifestyles.
I too run Evernote and Dropbox on my iPad and iPhone. While I don't use Evernote much it's nice to have there. Dropbox though is ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE and a regular part of my day for both personal and work items. It makes it far easier to work on documents when I'm not in the office and keep everything in synch. Even more awesome is that the base service with 2GB is FREE!!!
IMHO...Best App/Service EVER!
I found the share and shared it.
I don't even have an iPhone but know this would be GREAT info if I was an iPhone user.
To bad this blog does not have a share feature,I would share this one.
Glad you enjoyed the post, Sidney and that you eventually found the share buttons! We're working on adding the sharing icons to the individual posts as well. It should be available soon.
Just got my new Iphone and YES - I love it so far! I'm trying to limit the apps I get hooked on. It's a slippery slope!
Kathy...here's a little bonus tip...check out http://dealmac.com/. If you sign up for their newsletter you'll see all kinds of notices of apps on sale or better yet for FREE! It certainly makes for a better and less expensive way to feed the app addiction.
Thank you. I tried it and it worked. Your new blog will be very helpful to me!
Great to hear - thanks!
